2020 WINEMAKERS RESERVE SAPERAVI
Sourced from Seneca Arrowhead Vineyards on the southwest side of Seneca Lake, this Saperavi thrives in well-drained glacial soils, steady lake-driven airflow, and warm afternoon sun balanced by cool nights, ideal conditions for this thick-skinned teinturier variety. The warm, dry 2020 growing season brought low disease pressure, concentrated flavors, and a long, even ripening window, allowing the fruit to reach full phenolic maturity with vibrant acidity and deep color.
This wine was aged 60 months in a single large-format puncheon, developing aromatic nuance, a polished tannin profile, and a seamless texture while maintaining purity of fruit. Bottled on our estate, it reflects both the character of Seneca Arrowhead Vineyard and the remarkable 2020 vintage.

This is clearly the best red from the saperavi grape that I ever encountered outside its home region of Georgia in the Caucasus. Great power and spices on the compact, highly structured, medium- to full-bodied palate. I love the red and black forest berry aromas. The freshness in the very long finish is stunning. Very limited production from one oak puncheon. Drink or hold.

Inky and deeply hued, the 2020 Saperavi opens with aromas of black cherry, plum compote, and crushed blackberry layered with hints of graphite, cedar, and warm spice. On the palate, it is bold yet lifted, with dark fruit at the core supported by firm, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, and a distinct mineral edge. Extended puncheon aging brings harmony and polish, creating a long, structured finish with notes of cocoa, clove, and wet stone.
