About Keuka Winery

A History of Winemaking

A region on the rise

The Finger Lakes has quickly become one of the most dynamic and sought-after wine regions in the world. Nestled in central New York, the third-largest wine-producing state in the U.S., the Finger Lakes is home to over 144 wineries.

The region is earning national and international acclaim for its diverse winemaking styles, impressive range of grape varieties, and ideal growing conditions shaped by glacial lakes and a cool climate.

Small farm wineries spark change

The 70s and early 80s were a struggle for the New York wine industry. In response, grape growers united to advocate for change – leading to the Farm Winery Act.

Signed into law by Governor Mario Cuomo in 1976, this landmark legislation eventually led to the New York wine industry's revival – fueling a surge in new wineries, new grape varieties, a booming tourism scene, and a growing footprint in the global wine market. Glenora Cellars was the first farm winery in the area.

The Simmons Family

Neil and Joyce Simmons established Simmons Vineyards in 1962 on Bluff Point, the peninsula that creates the fork in Keuka Lake.

The Simmons children - Daren, Jeff, Kris, and Kim – were instrumental in the growth of the vineyard.

The Bluff Point Mafia

The Bluff Point Mafia was a tight-knit community of growers that took root on Bluff Point in the 1960s. For nearly three decades, this passionate collective supported one another, lobbied for change, organized work-bees, and celebrated success together.

Their legacy lives on through our native wines, The Bluffers, a proud tribute to this iconic group and a reminder of how vital community is to who we are and everything we do.

Keuka Spring Vineyards is born

Len and Judy Wiltberger founded Keuka Spring Vineyards in 1985, planting 12 acres on the hillside now known as Vista Ridge Vineyard.

Chosen for its ideal soils, this site also boasts stunning views and a natural spring that still provides our water today.

Simmons Vineyards

Simmons Vineyards was founded by Neil & Joyce Simmons and is now owned and operated by their son Daren and his wife Julie.

It has grown from 40 acres in the early 60s to one of the larger vineyards in the northeast with more than 500 acres, over 23 grape varieties, and vineyards on both Keuka and Seneca Lakes.

Our Wine Tasting Team

The Wine Tasting Team is a cornerstone to the soul of KSV. Team members are deeply connected with our guests, current in their knowledge of our wines, and share a passion for our wines and the stories behind them. They bring the vineyards, winemaking projects, and wines to life with great heart.

Guided for years by Lauren Binnert’s steady leadership, the team believes wine is more than a drink - it’s a catalyst for connection and joy.

Our Winemaking Team

At our core, is a driving force in the pursuit of making great wines. Led by Head Winemaker, Dan Bissell, our cellar team is made up of true artisans devoted to their craft. They instill harmony and elegance throughout our diverse portfolio, showcasing their thoughtful approach to cool climate wines.

We believe magic happens when you tell the true story of the Finger Lakes and our team works hard to do that.

Challenging times

The 70s and early 80s was a challenging time that truly tested our industry. Taylor Wine Company canceled all contracts. There were few markets for grapes. Many lost their farms.

The Simmons family diversified and innovated to keep Simmons Vineyards in existence. They sold old grape brush for decorations, invented a suckering machine, and even started a garbage business. These ventures bridged Simmons Vineyards to the other side of the crisis.

Annette & Jeff Simmons

Annette and Jeff Simmons, vineyard owners for over 45 years, acquired Keuka Spring Vineyards in 2022. Guided by the belief that “life happens at the table,” and that wine serves as a catalyst to build community and inspire joy. They are dedicated to raising the profile of Finger Lakes wines and they strive to create a welcoming space where people can gather, connect, and celebrate.

Family is at the heart of their vision—with their children Madison, Georgia, her husband Charles, Neil-Walker, Miles, Lila, and Baker.

What we believe

Life happens at the table. Where great wine and food spark deep connection, laughter, and joy. Where community is built, life is processed, and memories are made. The place we come together. The heart of what truly matters.

We also believe that hospitality begins with food security and that everyone deserves a seat at the table. This belief has driven our involvement with local initiatives to help ensure quality protein is available to more people in our communities.
