By Dan Bissell, Head Winemaker, Keuka Spring Vineyards
When I stepped into the winemaker role at Keuka Spring, I knew we had everything we needed to make something really special. The land, the vineyards, the team—it all pointed to a huge opportunity. That’s why it was so rewarding to see two of our Rieslings recently earn over 90 points from Wine Spectator. It’s a proud moment, and a sign that the work we’re putting in is showing up in the glass.
What It Means for Keuka Spring
This recognition is about more than scores. It validates the approach we’ve been taking: investing in the vineyard, expanding our capacity, and creating the flexibility to slow down and make decisions that allow the wine to reach its full potential. That’s what has made the difference.
We’ve built in the ability to let wines rest a little longer, to let them evolve naturally, and to craft them with intention. I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to achieve, and even more excited about where we’re going.
The Wines That Got Us Here
The two Rieslings that earned recognition are perfect examples of the story we’re trying to tell through our wines.
2022 Winemakers Reserve Dry Riesling
This wine is bright, energetic, and layered. We brought together small vineyard lots, fermented them naturally in barrels with no added yeast, and stirred the lees to develop texture and depth. It captures everything I love about what Riesling can be in this region.
2023 Riesling Seneca Arrowhead VineyardThis single-vineyard wine is all about precision and place. It expresses the character of that vineyard in a single moment in time. It’s clean, vibrant, and honest—a great example of how less intervention can let the fruit speak for itself.
The Journey Ahead
This milestone is just that—a milestone. It’s a signpost that we’re on the right path, but it’s not the destination. We’re still growing as a winery, we’re still exploring, and we’re committed to continuing to improve every vintage.
We’ve got over 60 years of grape growing and 40 years of winemaking at Keuka Spring, and this is just the next step in a journey that has plenty of road ahead.
If you haven’t been to the winery in a while, we’d love to welcome you back. Come taste what we’re working on, rediscover Keuka Spring, and join us at the table. As we like to say: Life Happens at the Table.
